WHO ARE YOUNG CARERS?
Young people aged 18 years or younger providing support or help with the care of someone you live with. Young carers help care for a person who has a disability, long term illness, mental health issues or is a frail older person. This person may be a parent, sibling or other relative.
WHAT DO YOUNG CARERS DO?
Every young carer’s situation is different. They do things like:
- shopping, cooking, cleaning
- paying bills
- helping with showering and dressing
- giving medication
- emotional support
HOW DOES THE YOUNG CARER PROGRAM WORK?
The program supports young people who have the added responsibility of providing assistance to someone they care for. The Young Carer Program is available for young carers who are studying at school and who may have difficulty managing their studies as well as their caring responsibilities.
WE MAY BE ABLE TO HELP
If you’re at school and need help with things like:
- Respite – taking a break from your caring responsibilities
- Help at home
- Tutoring to help you with your school work and help you prepare for exams
- Access to school holiday activities
